According to reports, Shanmugam had suffered multiple fractures in his skull due to his fall from the stairs. He was being treated at a local hospital, where he breathed his last on Friday.
According to reports, Shanmugam was cremated at the Mandai crematorium on Friday evening. According to the news, Muhammad Azfri Abdul Kaha (27), who pushed Shanmugam, was booked on the charge of voluntarily causing grievous hurt to a person. However, it is not clear from the documents produced in the court whether Shanmugam and Kaha knew each other or not. According to the news published in ‘The Strait Times’, if found guilty, Kaha could be punished with imprisonment of up to 10 years, as well as whipping or fine.
According to court documents, Kaha was indicted while he was out of prison under a pardon order after being sentenced for other crimes. If found guilty, Kaha could face an additional 178 days in prison, The Strait Times reported. A pardon order is issued to allow a prisoner to serve a part of his sentence outside prison.
