Indian para athletes struggling for basic facilities despite excellent performance

Indian para players have shown great patience and courage and have performed brilliantly in big tournaments, but they still have to struggle for basic facilities in everyday life and sports routine. The Indian contingent had given its best performance by winning 19 medals in the 2021 Tokyo Paralympics and in the recently concluded Para Asian Games, India created history by winning an unprecedented 111 medals including 29 gold, 31 silver and 51 bronze medals. India’s star Para table tennis player and current Commonwealth Games champion Bhavina Patel added Para Asian Games gold medal to her Paralympic silver. He feels that more needs to be done to empower para-athletes.

Bhavina told PTI, “There are still many government offices where wheelchair facilities are not available. When you go abroad you never feel such problems, everything is available there. With such facilities we will feel more independent. He said, “Many states do not have policies for para-athletes and these should be made as soon as possible.” There is a lot of difference in the facilities of para athletes and normal players, hence these should be catered to. Bhavina said, “There has been a lot of improvement as compared to before but there is a need for improvement in all these departments to take them to the next level.” Para players are trying to improve their level but if they get support in these things then they can do better. ,

Paralympic champion badminton player Krishna Nagar feels that he can perform better by training in a bigger hall. He said, “When we travel abroad for tournaments, we go to their stadiums and train, so we feel a little strange with their big courts. He said, “I train in Jaipur where there are 11 courts in a hall which have been provided by the government but many places do not have this facility.” Sports Minister Anurag Thakur on Tuesday said some of the Asian Para Games Met the medal winners. He said that the government is actively working to provide infrastructure for para players. Thakur said, “We are building some new centers for para sports in Bhopal and some other places. If there is a big center in each region, then we will also talk to some state governments to make some changes in it so that they can be used for sports. He also said that work on Khelo India Para Games is also going on.
