New Delhi: In view of the poor financial condition during the Corona epidemic, the Indian Railways had stopped the discount on tickets for senior citizens. Due to this, Railways have earned an additional Rs 2,242 crore in the financial year 2022-23. This was revealed in the information received on an application under the Right to Information (RTI) Act. Railways had earned Rs 1,500 crore more between March 20, 2020 and March 31, 2022. After the onset of the Covid pandemic, the concession given to elderly passengers was suspended. Before Corona, people above 60 years of age used to get up to 50 percent discount on rail tickets. There has been a demand for its restoration for a long time. But the Railways has not yet restored it.

In response to the information sought under the RTI Act of Chandrashekhar Gaur of Madhya Pradesh, the Railways said that between April 1, 2022 and March 31, 2023, it did not give exemption to about eight crore senior citizens. These include 4.6 crore men, 3.3 crore women and 18,000 transgenders. According to the RTI reply, the total revenue from senior citizens during this period stood at Rs 5,062 crore, including an additional Rs 2,242 crore earned due to suspension of the concession. There has been a continuous increase in the earnings of the Railways from the fares of senior citizens. Between 20 March 2020 to 31 March 2022, Railways did not give concession to 7.31 crore senior passengers. These included 4.46 crore male passengers aged 60 years and above, 2.84 crore female passengers above the age of 58 and 8,310 transgenders.

The total revenue earned from senior citizen passengers was Rs 3,464 crore during 2020-22, which is Rs 1,500 crore more than what they would have earned if concession was offered to them. During the financial year 2022-23, Railways earned Rs 2,891 crore from male senior citizen passengers, Rs 2,169 crore from female passengers and Rs 1.03 crore from transgenders. Women senior citizen passengers are eligible for 50 per cent concession, while men and transgenders can avail 40 per cent in all classes. The minimum age limit for women to avail the concession is 58 years, while for men it is 60 years. Concessions to senior citizens were stopped from March 2020 following the outbreak of the Corona virus pandemic in the country. Those concessions have not been restored so far. While train services remained suspended for most of 2020 and parts of 2021, there have been calls for restoration of concessions as services return to normal.
