Indian woman, nine killed in US shooting

Nine people, including an Indian engineer, were killed when a gunman opened fire at a crowded mall in the US state of Dallas, Texas. Officials gave this information on Monday. The firing incident took place on Saturday around 03:30 pm at ‘Allen Premium Outlets’. McKinney resident Aishwarya Thatikonda was shopping with a friend when gunman Mauricio Garcia opened fire, the New York Post newspaper reported. According to the news, at least eight people died in this incident.

A police officer then shot the 33-year-old attacker, Garcia. Aishwarya, daughter of a district judge at Rangareddy district court in Telangana, was working as a project engineer in the company ‘Perfect General Contractors’. A representative of her family confirmed to television station WFAA that Aishwarya was among the victims of the violence. According to a friend of the victim’s father, Aishwarya had spoken to her family before the incident on Saturday and calls from her family after the shooting incident went unanswered.

Aishwarya’s father’s friend said, “The family got the news of the death on Sunday. They are in shock. They have been told that efforts are being made (to send) Aishwarya’s body by Wednesday.” According to ‘New York Post’, Aishwarya’s family is preparing to bring her body to India. The Indian Consulate in Houston said it was in touch with the family of the deceased as well as the local authorities. It tweeted on Monday, “We express our deepest condolences to the family of Aishwarya Thatikonta, who was killed in the tragic shooting incident on May 6 in Allen, Texas. We are in touch with the family of the deceased as well as the local authorities. Our officers are available to provide all possible help. We are closely monitoring the situation.

According to Aishwarya’s LinkedIn profile, she was working as a project engineer in Dallas for more than two years. Aishwarya studied civil engineering from a college in Hyderabad and did her post-graduation from the US. Following the shooting, police searched a home belonging to Garcia’s parents in Dallas. At the same time, the officers also searched a hotel where the attacker was staying. According to the statistics related to the shooting incident in America, there have been at least 198 such incidents in the country so far in 2023. It is noteworthy that on May 24 last year, an assailant opened fire at a school in Texas, killing 19 children and two adults.
