In a shocking development amid growing tussle between the government and the top judiciary, 180 MPs have expressed full confidence in the leadership of Shehbaz Sharif. By the way, Shehbaz Sharif needed only 172 votes to win the trust vote. Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) chief and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari moved a motion of full confidence in the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in the lower house. The proposal was supported by 180 MPs in the 342-member National Assembly. Let us tell you that when Shehbaz Sharif was elected Prime Minister in April last year, he had the support of 174 MPs. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif later addressed the House and thanked the MPs for reposing faith in him. Earlier, however, Information Minister Maryam Aurangzeb dismissed reports that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif would seek a vote of confidence in Parliament amid a tussle with the top judiciary.

Let us tell you that Shehbaz Sharif’s renewed confidence comes after the National Assembly rejected the money bill introduced by the government to provide funds to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for conducting elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. There was speculation about getting votes. The National Assembly will complete its five-year term in August this year. As per the constitution, elections will be held within 90 days of the dissolution of the lower house. This means the election should be held by mid-October. The last general election in Pakistan was held in July 2018. Let us tell you that Imran Khan’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is pressing for holding elections to provincial assemblies. But the government is firm on its stand of holding simultaneous elections across the country.

Meanwhile, the government and the opposition met on Thursday to end the impasse over holding elections in Pakistan and both sides decided to continue talks on the issue on Friday as well. Sources said that the first round of talks took place in the committee room number-3 of Parliament House and the meeting lasted for two hours. Sources said that the talks were held in a good atmosphere and both the sides put forward their respective stand. Yousuf Raza Gilani, a key member of the government’s negotiating team, told the media after the first round that talks would resume on Friday. He said that PTI will present the demands and the coalition partners of the government will be informed about the demands.
