The float was part of a 5 km long parade taken out by Khalistani supporters in Brampton, Canada. The purported video is believed to be of a pro-Khalistan parade in Brampton on June 4, days before the 39th anniversary of Operation Blue Star on June 6. The video drew sharp reactions on social media, who condemned the parade taken out by Khalistan supporters.
Meanwhile, India has also formally expressed its displeasure to the Canadian government on Wednesday regarding this incident. The High Commission of India in Ottawa sent a formal note to Global Affairs Canada (GAC) terming the incident as “not acceptable”. A senior official said that you cannot encroach on freedom of expression like this, glorifying the murder of a leader of a democratic country.
Operation Blue Star and the assassination of Indira Gandhi
Operation Blue Star refers to the Indian Army’s attack on terrorists hiding inside the Golden Temple in Amritsar, Punjab. The army laid siege to the Golden Temple complex between June 3 and 6, 1984, with the aim of rooting out hundreds of Sikh militants led by Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. The military strike met with much backlash and was followed by the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984.
