Last year, after an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in cattle here, the colors of Bakrid had faded as the government had banned animal sacrifice. Several countries in Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore, are celebrating Bakrid on Thursday, while Muslims in other parts of the world, including countries such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey, Afghanistan and Nigeria, celebrated the festival on Wednesday.

People offered prayers together in Indonesia’s capital Jakarta on Thursday. A huge crowd of people was seen in the mosques for the morning prayers. Large numbers of people turned up at the Istiqlal Grand Mosque in Jakarta, the largest mosque in Southeast Asia. “Thanks to Allah, we can pray Eid al-Adha with our families and now celebrate the festival without fear of any outbreak and global pandemic,” said Jakarta resident Neysya Fabiola. Due to foot-and-mouth disease, the tradition of sacrificing animals on Bakrid was banned in Indonesia.

Foot-and-mouth disease, a highly contagious animal disease, is sometimes transmitted to humans. The Indonesian government has decided to extend the Bakrid holiday this year by mandating an additional two days off before and after the festival. President Joko Widodo said the decision was taken to boost economic activity and tourism in the world’s largest island nation. Significantly, according to Islamic belief, Prophet Hazrat Ibrahim was going to sacrifice his son Hazrat Ismail on this day on the order of Allah in the path of God, then Allah gave life to his son Ismail. In his memory, the festival of Eid-ul-Azha i.e. Bakrid is celebrated.
