Indonesia: Fierce fire in Jakarta’s oil depot, 17 including two children killed, more than 50 injured

JAKARTA: A massive fire broke out at a government oil depot in the Indonesian capital Jakarta on Friday, killing at least 17 people died and more than 50 people were injured. The massive fire burned down several homes, prompting panic and forcing people to evacuate residential areas near a depot run by state energy firm Pertmina in North Jakarta.

Jakarta’s Fire and Rescue Department said 17 people, including two children, were killed in the blaze, while at least 50 others were injured. Department chief Satriyadi Gunawan told AFP that many of those killed and injured in the blaze suffered severe burns.
Indonesia’s 25 percent fuel supply disrupted
The fuel storage depot, operated by state oil and gas company Pertamina, is located near a densely populated area in the Tanah Merah area in North Jakarta. It supplies 25 percent of Indonesia’s fuel needs.

Fire officials said that at least 180 firemen and 37 fire tenders are engaged in extinguishing the fire in the surrounding area. Army chief General Dudung Abdurchaman, who visited the scene, said at least 14 people had been killed and 42 had been hospitalised, some with severe burns.
