On 22 June, the International Olympic Committee held an online plenary meeting and decided to derecognise IBA based on the recommendation of the Executive Committee. Boxing has been an Olympic sport since 1904, however, due to governance, refereeing, financial, professional ethics and other issues, the International Olympic Committee suspended recognition of the IBA in 2019, and subsequently banned the IBA from the Tokyo Olympic Games and the Paris Olympics. Disqualified from running the boxing competitions of the Games.
The International Olympic Committee has called for a number of reforms to the IBA, but a report released earlier this month revealed that they have failed to meet the conditions set by the IOC. Therefore, the IOC Executive Committee recommends that the plenary session of the International Olympic Committee derecognise the IBA. To protect the interests of boxers and boxing events, the Plenary Session of the International Olympic Committee, accepting the recommendation of the Executive Committee, retained the boxing event at next year’s Paris Olympics.
