Is the Afghan embassy going to be closed in India? Letter sent to Foreign Ministry
[ad_1]
Big changes are taking place on the diplomatic front in India. While all the focus is on the standoff with Canada, something is also going on with Afghanistan. Media reports suggest that the Afghan Embassy in New Delhi is likely to be closed by September 30. The embassy is run by diplomats from the previous government. There is a power struggle between the Taliban regime, which captured Kabul two years ago, and the democratically elected Afghan government led by its predecessor, Ashraf Ghani.
Why is the Afghan Embassy closing in New Delhi?
The Afghanistan Embassy has informed India that it is being forced to close due to lack of cooperation from the Taliban government and New Delhi. The decision was conveyed in an unsigned note verbale to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) this week, indicating that the embassy would close at the end of the month. The note also mentioned that New Delhi had rejected several request letters seeking assistance and visas for around 3,000 Afghan students who were scheduled to travel to India in 2021 but were denied travel time. The documents were not given. The letter also requested that permission be given to hoist the Afghan tricolor over the mission in New Delhi. The flag represents the democratic government of Afghanistan, which was overthrown by the Taliban regime, reports The Hindu.
What will happen to Afghan ambassadors and diplomats?
Afghanistan’s envoy to India Farid Mamundze was appointed by the previous Islamic Republic of Afghanistan led by former President Ashraf Ghani. He has been in London for several months. Other diplomats have also been granted asylum in countries such as the United States, Canada and Australia. Three Afghan diplomats Anwar Sadat, Sediqullah Sahar and Mosa Naimi remained in the embassy in New Delhi. Sadat and Sahar are expected to leave the capital for France on Thursday night, the sources said. News of the embassy closure comes after reports that 11 Indian employees were fired from their jobs on Friday and not allowed to enter the mission.
