Deir Al Balah. Israeli forces are searching for Hamas terrorists by surrounding Palestinian men in northern Gaza. The United Nations has warned that its operation to supply relief goods to civilians has been severely disrupted. The war between Hamas and Israel has been going on for two months. The detention of Palestinians reflects the Israeli army’s attempt to establish control in northern Gaza.
Fierce fighting continues in urban areas of northern Gaza amid heavy resistance from Hamas. Six weeks after the arrival of military forces and tanks, thousands of people are still living in the area. The first images of mass detentions in the city of Beit Lahiya emerged on Thursday, showing dozens of semi-nude men kneeling in the street with their hands tied behind their backs. Some men have their heads bowed.
The United Nations said Israeli forces are allegedly detaining boys and men over the age of 15 in a school being used as a shelter. The US on Friday used a veto in the world body against a resolution supported by almost all UN Security Council members and several other countries demanding an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza. Supporters of the resolution warned of further deaths and destruction if the war continues for a third month, calling it a sad day.
In the 15-member Security Council of the United Nations, 13 votes against one were cast in favor of the resolution. Britain abstained from voting. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the council that there was an “extreme risk of total collapse of the humanitarian aid system” in Gaza. Hamas had made an unexpected attack on Israel on October 7, after which Israel also retaliated and resolved to crush the terrorist organization. Israel initially launched air and ground attacks on the northern part of Gaza, forcing thousands of residents to flee south.
A week ago, Israel expanded its ground attacks to also target central and southern Gaza. The total population of Palestine is approximately 2.3 million and due to attacks in Northern Gaza, almost the entire population has shifted to Southern Gaza. Humanitarian aid is not reaching many of these people. Israeli aircraft in central Gaza on Friday dropped leaflets on the refugee camps of Nussirat and Maghaji with a message aimed at Hamas officials that read, “To Hamas leaders: Life for life, eye for an eye and whoever… He is the one who started it. If we punish, we will give the same punishment that we have faced.” A few hours later, an attack took place on a residential building in Nusirat.
A nearby hospital said at least 21 people died in the attack. Israeli government spokesman Elion Levy said Friday that the men had been detained in demilitarized areas in northern Gaza that were expected to be evacuated several weeks ago. Army spokesman Daniel Hagari said about 200 people had been detained in the past 48 hours. He told that many people including the commander of Hamas have been taken to Israel for questioning. Israel says that out of about 240 people whom Hamas had taken hostage on October 7, 137 are still in its captivity. Israeli forces tried unsuccessfully on Friday to free Israeli hostages from a site in Gaza.
