Jerusalem: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israel has ‘no intention’ of maintaining its occupation of Gaza or displacing civilians. According to a news agency report, Netanyahu made these comments a day before the start of the hearing at the International Court of Justice in The Hague regarding the alleged massacre of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. He said, ‘I want to make a few things clear – Israel has no intention of permanently occupying Gaza or displacing its civilian population.’
He said Israel’s bombing of Gaza is aimed at Hamas militants, ‘not at the Palestinian population, and we are doing so in full compliance with international law.’ Netanyahu said that ‘the Israeli military is doing its best to minimize civilian casualties, while Hamas is trying its best to maximize them by using Palestinian civilians as human shields.’
He said, ‘Our goal is to liberate Gaza from Hamas terrorists and free our hostages.’ Meanwhile, the Hamas-run health ministry reported that the Palestinian death toll from the ongoing Israeli offensive has reached 23,357, and that about 1.9 million of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million have been displaced.
