Israel’s refusal to accept two-state solution could endanger global peace: UN chief

UN chief Antonio Guterres warned Israel on Tuesday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s rejection of a two-state solution would surely escalate a conflict that already threatens global peace and emboldens extremists everywhere.
“The creation of a fully independent state is the right of the Palestinian people and must be recognized by all,” Guterres told a UN Security Council ministerial meeting in his toughest comments yet on the Israel-Hamas war. “Anyone’s refusal to accept the National Solution must be strongly rejected.”
He said, “With such a large number of Palestinians lacking true freedom, rights and dignity, the alternative to a one-state solution… is unimaginable.” He also warned that the risk of regional spillover from the conflict is “now becoming a reality.” He urged all parties to exercise restraint.
Netanyahu’s refusal to accept any vision of a post-war Palestinian state has driven a wedge between Israel and its closest nation, the United States. America says that there should be talks towards a two-state solution where Israel and Palestine can live together in peace. Many countries have supported this.
Guterres also reiterated his pending demand for a humanitarian ceasefire. Many countries want that the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas should be stopped on humanitarian grounds so that food, water and medicines etc. can be supplied to the needy.
But Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Gilard Erdan, rejected the ceasefire, saying Hamas was bent on re-attacking and destroying Israel and that stopping fighting would allow militants to “regroup and obtain weapons.” He urged the Security Council to “destroy the roots” of the conflict. Erdan says that the root of the conflict is Iran.
