Sri Lanka’s Election Commission informed the Supreme Court on Monday that it was difficult to hold the March 9 local body elections due to a number of reasons linked to the country’s current economic crisis. The commission’s lawyers filed a petition citing the Finance Ministry’s expressed inability to release the required funds, the government printer’s demand for advance payment for printing ballot papers, and the authorities’ reluctance to increase the fuel quota for election work. .
The commission also expressed regret that they are unable to fulfill the earlier assurance given by the court that all arrangements would be made for holding the elections. The EC’s move was in response to petitions filed by opposition parties, requesting the court to order the holding of elections. He claimed that the postponement of the election was a violation of the right of the people to vote and accused the government of fearing the election due to the fear of losing the election. Due to the current economic crisis, elections to appoint new administrations for four-year terms in 340 local councils have been postponed since March last year. The Supreme Court will hear the related petition on February 23.
