Jaishankar said during their meetings that the primary objective of his visit to Colombo was to express India’s solidarity with Sri Lanka at this difficult moment. We would like the Sri Lankan government to create a powerful channel to provide a more business-friendly environment, he said in his press statement. I am sure the seriousness of the situation has been realized by the policy makers here. Later in the day, he interacted with the Sri Lankan business community. Discussed the importance of economic growth as a solution to current challenges, he tweeted.
Talked about creating a more investment friendly environment. Earlier, Jaishankar assured the Sri Lankan leadership that India would help the country in its economic recovery by increasing investments in sectors such as tourism, energy and infrastructure. India, he said, would encourage greater investment in Sri Lanka’s economy, especially in key sectors such as energy, tourism and infrastructure. Jaishankar highlighted energy security as one of Sri Lanka’s most pressing challenges. He said, this country has huge potential of renewable energy which can become a sustainable source of revenue.
It also has the potential to emerge as an energy hub for Trincomalee. The External Affairs Minister said that India is ready to be a reliable partner in such initiatives. He said the two countries have agreed in principle on a renewable energy framework that will take this cooperation forward. Jaishankar described tourism as the lifeblood of Sri Lanka’s economy and promised that the Indian government would take steps to make the sector sustainable.
Regarding bilateral trade, he said that it is necessary that India and Sri Lanka stabilize their trade relations. He said, I want to underline that India is a reliable neighbor, a reliable partner, who is ready to go the extra mile in need of Sri Lanka. Jaishankar said that his visit here reaffirmed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to the policy of ‘neighbourhood first’. “We will stand by Sri Lanka in its hour of need and we are confident that it will overcome the challenges it is currently facing,” he said. Later, he handed over 500 Ashok Leyland buses to Sri Lankan Transport Minister Bandula Gunawardene as part of India’s ongoing efforts to help the island nation.
