Jaishankar attends BIMSTEC meeting in Bangkok, discusses strengthening coordination

Bangladesh will become the new chairman of this seven-member group from December. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar attended the 12th meeting of the Mekong Ganga Cooperation (MGC) mechanism here on Sunday.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday held productive discussions with his counterparts from countries in the BIMSTEC region during which the leaders discussed strengthening “resilience and coordination” towards the shared objectives of promoting progress and prosperity. The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) was established in 1997. It is an important regional grouping which includes India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Nepal and Bhutan. The countries of this group have a total population of 1.73 billion and a gross domestic product (GDP) of more than $400 billion. Jaishankar tweeted, “A meaningful meeting of BIMSTEC was concluded in Bangkok a while ago. There was an open dialogue with colleagues and forward-looking discussions.

“Focused on strengthening flexibility and coordination among BIMSTEC members. We explored new dimensions and activities to enter new areas of cooperation. “The Foreign Minister said,” Food, health and energy security are matters of common concern. Technology solutions can be subjects of collaboration and exchange of good initiatives between us. Our shared objective is to encourage progress and prosperity. We agreed to meet frequently to take these ideas forward.

On July 6, Saurabh Kumar, Secretary for Eastern Affairs in the Ministry of External Affairs, and Masood Bin Momin, Foreign Secretary of Bangladesh, discussed various topics related to the Dhaka-based BIMSTEC grouping in Dhaka. Bangladesh will become the new chairman of this seven-member group from December. Foreign Minister S.
