External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday called for a multipolar world while pushing for reforms in the United Nations. The External Affairs Minister underlined that the world is grappling with “new forms of inequality and domination”. Addressing the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit in Uganda’s capital Kampala, Jaishankar presented India’s vision inspired by “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”. He said that the world has completely changed since the NAM meeting in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan in 2019. The minister said, “The COVID-19 pandemic has devastated all of us, the wounds of which will take generations to heal. There are conflicts going on whose impact is being felt far and wide. Gaza in particular is at the center of our concern.
The foreign minister said the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip requires a “permanent solution that provides immediate relief to those most affected”. In his address, he said, “The conflict in Gaza is clearly at the center of our concern. This humanitarian crisis requires a permanent solution that provides immediate relief to those most affected.” He said, ”We must also be clear that terrorism and hostage-taking are unacceptable. At the same time, international humanitarian law should always be respected by all countries. It is also important that the conflict does not spread within or outside the region.” He advocated a two-state solution where the Palestinian people could live within secure borders. He said climate change is reaching dangerous levels rapidly and regularly and there are few who have not felt its effects.
He said, “Debt, inflation and development challenges have also had a huge impact on development.” Jaishankar said, “We may have uprooted colonialism, but we are struggling with new forms of inequality and domination.” He said that the era of globalization is focused on economies which treat the rest of the world only as markets or resources. Jaishankar called for a multipolar world while emphasizing on reform of the United Nations. “We must also emphasize cultural rebalancing where all heritages are mutually respected,” he said. The minister said that by leading the G20 membership of the African Union during its presidency of the grouping, India has shown that change is possible. He said that this should inspire improved multilateralism. Jaishankar said that there is a need to take practical steps to change the world order.
NAM is a forum of 120 countries that is not formally aligned with or against any major powerful bloc. Jaishankar also commended Uganda for assuming the presidency of the NAM at this critical time and praised former Chair Azerbaijan for leading the grouping during this difficult period. The minister also welcomed South Sudan as a new member.
