Cape Town. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar met his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on Thursday and discussed issues of bilateral and global interests.
Jaishankar, who is here to attend a summit of the five-nation group ‘BRICS’ (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa), held talks with Lavrov on the sidelines of the BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting.
Jaishankar tweeted, “Nice to meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Cape Town this morning. Our discussions included bilateral matters, BRICS, G20 and SCO. India will host the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and G-20 summits in July and September respectively.
India has become a major importer of subsidized crude oil from Russia in the past few months, while the West has been increasingly wary of purchases in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. India’s economic ties with Russia have strengthened over the past year, The main reason for which is the purchase of subsidized oil from Russia. India has not yet condemned the Russian attack on Ukraine and is insisting on resolving the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy.
