External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held talks with his Sri Lankan counterpart Ali Sabri soon after his arrival here on Thursday. Jaishankar also met President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Sri Lanka is trying to get financial assurances from China, Japan and India, along with trying to get a $2.9 billion ‘bridge loan’ from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The IMF bailout package has been put on hold as Sri Lanka continues to negotiate with debt-lending nations regarding meeting the global lender’s conditionality for the facility.
President Wickremesinghe said on Tuesday that his government has “successfully” concluded its debt restructuring talks with India. Wickremesinghe told parliament, “I can tell this House that the talks have been successful.” On Tuesday, Rajat Kumar Mishra, additional secretary in India’s finance ministry, informed IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva that India had submitted a proposal for debt restructuring. has reaffirmed its support to Sri Lanka on the issue.
