The two leaders met on Friday on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference in Germany. The meeting comes amid bitterness in bilateral relations over the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada last year. Jaishankar, posted on ‘X’, met his Canadian counterpart Foreign Minister Melanie Jolie on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference 2024.
Our conversation clearly focused on the current state of our bilateral relations. There was also a meaningful discussion on the global situation. Jolie also wrote about her meeting with Jaishankar on ‘X’. He wrote, At the Munich Security Conference 2024, Dr. S. Jaishankar and I had a frank discussion on current global issues including Canada-India relations and Russia’s attack on Ukraine.
Relations between India and Canada were strained following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations on September 18 about the “possible” involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Nijjar on June 18 in British Columbia province. India had declared Nijjar a terrorist in 2020. India had rejected the Canadian government’s allegations as “absurd and motivated”.
