Japan’s defense chief ordered troops on Saturday to activate missile interceptors and prepare to deal with debris from a North Korean satellite whose pieces could fall over Japanese territory. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said earlier this week that his first military spy satellite would be launched at an unspecified date. North Korea has conducted nearly 100 missile tests since the beginning of last year. He says that through these tests he is responding to the joint military exercises of the US and South Korea.
Many missiles flew over Japan or fell on the coast of northern Japan. Last week, North Korea tested a solid-fueled intercontinental ballistic missile for the first time. Japanese Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada on Saturday instructed troops to prepare PAC-3 surface-to-air missiles in southwestern Japan, including Okinawa and nearby islands. Hamada also ordered the deployment of a destroyer armed with SM-3 ship-to-air missiles to coastal waters, according to a ministry statement. “We are making necessary preparations because of the possibility of issuing orders to destroy ballistic missiles and other objects,” the ministry said. The order to launch the missiles is yet to be approved by the prime minister.
