The US Geological Survey said the area was hit by an earthquake that struck along the coasts on Thursday morning. It said the most powerful earthquake had a magnitude of 6.1 and occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers. The quake was not felt on the islands or in the Tokyo area, but the Japan Meteorological Agency warned that tsunami waves up to one meter high could hit the islands’ coasts. Small tsunami waves of about 30 centimeters were seen in Yene on Hachijo Island, the agency said.
