Tokyo. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is leaving for Kiev on Tuesday morning for talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Pictures broadcast by Japan’s state television broadcaster NHK showed Kishida boarding a train and leaving for Kiev. Kishida’s sudden visit to Ukraine comes after meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. Kishida will preside over the summit of the G-7, a group of seven countries, to be held in May.
He is the only G-7 leader who did not visit Ukraine and was under pressure at home to do so. Japan is in step with the other G-7 countries in imposing sanctions on Russia and supporting Ukraine after Moscow invaded Ukraine. Kishida is expected to offer continued support for Ukraine during his meeting with Zelensky.
