Wellington : Jesida Ardern appeared in public for the last time as New Zealand’s prime minister on Tuesday, saying the people she will miss most are the reasons she was “happy in her job”. Ardern surprised the nation on Thursday by announcing she was stepping down.
Labor MPs voted unanimously on Sunday for Chris Hipkins to take over as prime minister and he will be sworn in on Wednesday. As one of her last acts as prime minister, Arden joined Hipkins and other MPs for a ceremony at Ratna Maidan. Ardern told reporters that her friendship with Hipkins goes back nearly 20 years and that she stayed with him for about two hours on the way to Ratna Maidan. She added that the only true advice she can give is, “Do what you want.”
She also spoke about the vitriolic and anti-women attacks on her on social media since her announcement and said that this was not the reason behind her resignation. Hipkins told reporters that the leadership change was “sour and sweet”. “I’m certainly honored to take on this role, but know full well that Jesida is a great friend of mine,” he added.
Ardern was greeted with a song. She told those on the ground that she would leave this assignment with more love and affection for New Zealand and its people. He said that his colleagues are extraordinary people. He said, “I have never done this job alone. I did this with the wonderful servants of New Zealand and I am leaving knowing that your future is in safe hands.
