London: Britain’s Security Minister Tom Tugendhat has announced a new fund of 95000 pounds (about one crore rupees) to increase his country’s capabilities to deal with ‘pro-Khalistan extremism’. The British High Commission has given this information in a statement on the occasion of Tugendhat’s three-day visit to India. His journey has started from Thursday. The new fund has been announced amid growing concerns in India over the rise in activities of pro-Khalistan elements in the UK.

Tugendhat is in India to enhance bilateral cooperation on security-related initiatives and to attend the G20 Anti-Corruption Ministerial Meeting. Before leaving for Kolkata for the G20 meeting on Saturday, Tugendhat met Foreign Minister S.K. Also met Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. The high commission said on Friday that during a meeting with India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in New Delhi on Thursday, Tugendhat announced new funds to enhance Britain’s capacity to deal with pro-Khalistan extremism.

It added that the £95,000 investment will enhance the government’s understanding of the threat posed by “pro-Khalistan extremism” and will complement the already ongoing joint work between the UK and India through the Joint Extremism Taskforce. Tugendhat said the living bridge between India and the UK reflects our deep and enduring friendship. As the world’s oldest and largest democracy, we have many shared opportunities to make the world a safer and more prosperous place.

He said that the deepening partnership between our two countries means that we can more effectively deal with the security threats that we both face. I am committed to working together to advance our understanding and capabilities against extremism in all its forms. The minister said that he is happy to participate in the G-20 anti-corruption meeting under the chairmanship of India. “Corruption harms our prosperity, our societies and puts our national security at risk,” he said.

On the question related to the announcement of the new fund by the UK minister, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said in a press conference that this is an internal matter of Britain and it would not be appropriate for him to comment on it. “Of course, we are stressing the need for the UK to act against extremists and radicals, especially those who are inciting violence and posing a security threat. Bagchi said the issue relating to the security of the Indian mission in London is part of the ongoing dialogue between the two sides.
