Police said they were present at a Khalistan referendum event at Federation Square on January 29 when the fighting started at around 12.45 pm and again at around 4.30 pm. Flag poles were used during this which caused physical injuries to many of the victims. The Indian tricolor was also lit by a group of men at the event. Two victims, one with head injuries and the other with hand injuries, were treated at the scene by paramedics.
Several other victims suffered injuries and required medical treatment. In both alleged incidents, police said they responded quickly to separate and disperse the crowd. Continuing its sweeping crackdown against Khalistanis, Victoria’s police had earlier released photographs of six men believed to have been involved in the violence in late January.
