Authorities responded with a violent crackdown that killed more than 500 people and detained more than 22,000 others, according to human rights groups. Protests largely ended earlier this year, but there are still widespread signs of discontent. The awards ceremony will be held on December 13. Last year the award was presented to the people of Ukraine and their representatives for responding to Russia’s attack.

Kurdish-Iranian woman Mahsa Amini will be posthumously awarded the European Union (EU)’s top ‘Sakharov Human Rights Prize’. This announcement was made on Thursday. Amini, 22, died in police custody in Iran last year, sparking worldwide protests against the country’s conservative Islamic theocracy. The European Union’s top award given in the field of human rights, ‘Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought’, was named after dissident Soviet leader Andrei Sakharov. The award was established in 1988 to honor individuals or groups who defend human rights and fundamental freedoms. Nobel Peace Prize winner Sakharov died in 1989.

Contenders for the award this year included Vilma Núñez de Escorcia and Rolando Álvarez, a Roman Catholic bishop who fought to defend human rights in Nicaragua. Apart from these, three women from Poland, El Salvador and America were also included who are leading the fight for “free, safe and legal abortion”. Amini died on September 16, 2022, after being arrested for not wearing a hijab. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola said that after Amini’s death, women started a movement through which history was being made. Amini died three days after being arrested by Iranian police.

Although the authorities said that he had suffered a heart attack, Amini’s supporters said that he (Amini) was beaten by the police and he died due to injuries caused by the beating. After Amini’s death, protests started which spread across the country. Authorities responded with a violent crackdown that killed more than 500 people and detained more than 22,000 others, according to human rights groups. Protests largely ended earlier this year, but there are still widespread signs of discontent. The awards ceremony will be held on December 13.
