An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Pakistan’s Punjab province on Tuesday extended till April 13 the interim bail granted to former Prime Minister Imran Khan in three cases. The cases were registered last month in connection with a clash between his supporters and the police outside his residence in Lahore. Khan appeared in the court in his personal capacity, Dawn newspaper reported, after which ATC judge A.K. Issuing the order, Gul Khan extended the bail period of 70-year-old Khan.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) shared a video on Twitter, in which party chief Khan is seen wearing a head-to-neck body armor while his security personnel surround him with shields. In the previous hearing, Presiding Justice Ejaz Ahmed Buttar had directed the PTI chief to ensure his appearance in subsequent hearings and also join the police investigation of the cases. The police had registered a case against Khan and other PTI leaders for allegedly attacking the police outside the Zaman Park residence and torching government property and vehicles.
At the start of Tuesday’s hearing, the judge highlighted that Khan has not yet posted a bond. Khan’s counsel, Barrister Salman Safdar, replied that the former prime minister was in danger of life. The judge then asked whether Khan would appear before the court or not and emphasized that the relief can be granted only to a person who appears before the court. The court then directed Khan’s counsel to produce his client at 11 am.
During the hearing, the head of the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) probing the alleged threat to the PTI chief’s life arrived in the court and said that Khan has not joined the probe. The court then directed Khan’s counsel to submit a written statement and asked the head of the JIT to appear in the next hearing. The judge also directed the JIT to complete the probe at the earliest. On November 3 last year, Khan was attacked during a rally in Punjab’s Wazirabad, in which he was shot in the leg.
