Jakarta. The search for people missing after two landslides triggered by torrential rains on an island in Indonesia’s remote Natuna region continued on Tuesday. Rescuers are searching for 42 missing people. Disaster prevention agency officials said teams of soldiers, policemen and volunteers were conducting a search operation in the villages of Genting and Pangkalan on a remote island surrounded by high seas in the Natuna region off the South China Sea. 42 people are reported to be trapped in 27 houses that came under the grip of tons of soil from the surrounding hills.
The Natuna disaster agency reduced the death toll from 11 to 10 on Tuesday morning. However, there is a possibility of its increase. According to information available on the agency’s website, four of the eight people injured in the landslide are in critical condition. The landslide has displaced more than 1200 people, who have taken shelter in evacuation centers and other shelters. Abdul Muhari, a spokesman for the National Disaster Response Agency, said the exact number of casualties and damages caused by the landslide were still being ascertained.
