During the inauguration ceremony of ‘World Harmony Year’ in the Parliament of Ontario province of Canada, Acharya Lokesh Muni said that political leaders should not put their country and society in trouble to fulfill their selfish interests. He said this at a time when the diplomatic standoff between India and Canada continues. ‘World Harmony Year’ is being celebrated to commemorate the 2,550th Nirvana Mahotsav of Lord Mahavir. Lokesh Muni, while addressing the gathering this week, said that Lord Mahavir was the pioneer of non-violence and peace and his teachings are more relevant in the present times than in the immediate past. He said that solutions to many global problems like global warming, violence, religious intolerance and inequality are found in the philosophy of Lord Mahavir.
Making an indirect comment on the strained relations between India and Canada, Lokesh Muni said that political leaders should not put the country and society in trouble to fulfill their selfish interests. According to a release issued in this regard, Lokesh Muni said that promoting violence, hatred and separatist thinking for electoral gains is wrong. Deepak Anand, MPP (Member of Provincial Parliament) of the Progressive Conservative Party in the Parliament of Ontario, said that maintaining peace and harmony in today’s world is a big challenge. He said that intolerance and violence between different religions and cultures is increasing. Anand said that in such an environment, organizing ‘World Harmony Year’ is extremely relevant.
He said that the teachings of Lord Mahavir will prove helpful in dealing with these challenges. Tensions between India and Canada escalated last month following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations of possible involvement of an Indian agent in the killing of Khalistani separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India had rejected Canada’s allegations as baseless.
According to the release, during the proceedings of the House, he introduced Lokesh Muni and praised his humanitarian work, which was welcomed by all the members of the House by thumping the table. New Democratic Party MPP Jill Andrew said that Lord Mahavir’s message is of peace, love and friendship.He said that the World Harmony Year is being organized with the sacred objective of promoting these values and promoting peace and harmony across the world, hence this event has been organized at the Parliament of Ontario.
