Pakistan’s financial capital Karachi has been ranked as one of the least liveable cities in the world. According to a report by The Economist Intelligence Unit, the Global Liveability Index for 2022 has ranked Karachi 168th out of 172 countries in terms of liveability. The worst performing cities in the ranking are Damascus in Syria, Tripoli in Libya and Lagos in Nigeria.
The ranking was based on more than 30 qualitative and quantitative factors across five categories including sustainability, health care, culture and environment, education and infrastructure. The cities’ scores were compiled and weighted to provide a scale from 1 to 100, with 1 denoting an intolerable living condition and 100 an ideal one.
Karachi received an overall score of 37.5, with a particularly poor performance in the sustainability indicator, receiving only a score of 20. The city received a score of 33 for healthcare, 35 for culture and environment, 66 for education and 51 for infrastructure. This is not the first time that Karachi has performed poorly in the livable cities index. In 2021, it was ranked 134 out of 140 cities, and in 2019, it was ranked 136 out of 140.
Vienna Most Liveable City
The top performing cities in the index are mainly from Western Europe and Canada. Austria’s capital Vienna took the top spot with a perfect score of 100 on indicators including stability, health care, education and infrastructure. The report said that Vienna, with its excellent mix of stability, culture and entertainment and reliable infrastructure, topped the ranking for the fourth time in five years.
