Pudhari Online: Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, of Indian descent, has announced his resignation from his post. Leo Varadkar has announced his surprise resignation for “personal and political reasons, but mainly for political reasons”. Varadkar would have become Prime Minister for the first time in 2017 after the Fine Gael party leader’s election. He would have become the country’s youngest Prime Minister and Ireland’s first homosexual Prime Minister.
Leo Varadkar’s origin is Varad Gavcha from Malvan in Sindhudurg, Maharashtra. In June 2017, he would have become the Prime Minister of Ireland for the first time.
Varadkar, who met colleagues outside government buildings in Dublin on Wednesday, said he felt he was no longer “the best person” for the post. He made it clear that he will remain the Prime Minister until the next successor is elected.
“I am resigning from today as (party) president and Fine Gael party leader. “After appointing my successor, I will resign as Prime Minister of Ireland,” Varadkar said.
His presidential decision came as a “surprise to many and angered none”, Varadkar said, adding that he had taken the decision with the interests of the country in mind.
Michael Martin, the leader of Fianna Fáil in the coalition government and the Deputy Prime Minister of Ireland, responded that Varadkar’s resignation decision was “unprecedented”.
Varadkar’s father is of Indian descent. And his parents are Irish. After becoming a doctor, at the age of 27, he would have entered Parliament. In 2015, while Health Minister, Varadkar announced on Irish national radio that he was gay. He played a role in supporting the historic Marriage Equality Bill, which allows same-sex couples to marry.
Sindhudurgat to come in 2019
In 2019, Varadkar would have visited Varadla, his native village in Sindhudurga. “Yes, this is my very important moment. I have come here with my parents, my sisters and their families. This is my family gift.” This is what Varadkar would have said while speaking to the PTI correspondent.
