The ministry said Wazed was selected in a voting with the participation of 10 member states of the WHO regional countries, including India, he got 8 votes and his rival Dr Acharya of Nepal got 2 votes. Wazed is a school psychologist and has been an advisor to the WHO chief on mental health and autism, while Acharya has been working with WHO for more than three decades and is currently Director in the Office of the Director-General of WHO. Bangladesh said the election of Saima Wajed as Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) South-East Asia Region reflects recognition of her passion for public health and confidence in her leadership skills. WHO said Saima, daughter of Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has been elected as the organization’s South-East Asia director. Saima’s four-year term will begin in 2024.

Member States elected Saima Wajed during a meeting of the 76th session of the Regional Committee for South-East Asia, the WHO statement said. Saima defeated Nepal’s candidate Dr. Shambhu Prasad Acharya in the election for this post. “I express my gratitude to the Member States for electing me as the next Director of the WHO South-East Asia Region,” Saima wrote on Twitter. The newly appointed regional director will take charge on February 1, 2024, Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement. Will do. Saima will hold this post from 2024 to 2028.
