Nepal’s Prime Minister Pushpakamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ said on Friday that after controlling various small kingdoms like Emperor Ashoka, he has been inspired by Lord Buddha to shun the path of violence and follow the path of peace shown by him. Prachanda compared himself to the Maurya emperor Ashoka at a special function organized at Lumbini, the birthplace of Gautama Buddha, on the occasion of Buddha Purnima. Emperor Ashoka adopted the path of non-violence after being influenced by the gruesome scene of the Kalinga war after a long period of violence in his life and followed the path shown by Buddha.
Recalling the historical event of Mauryan Emperor Ashoka, Prachanda said the same is true for Nepali Maoists who have given up armed struggle and adopted the path of peaceful politics after signing a peace treaty in 2006. It is estimated that more than 17,000 people died in the armed conflict in Nepal from 1996 to 2006. Maoist rebels launched an armed insurgency in 1996, with the aim of ending the monarchy and introducing democracy. Prachanda said that his party had shunned the path of violence by signing a peace treaty and was inspired by the teachings of Lord Buddha.
