Los Angeles shooting suspect found dead in van

Monterey Park (USA): The suspected gunman who killed 10 people during a Lunar New Year celebration in Los Angeles was found dead in a van on Sunday. He had fled in the same van after failing to carry out the second incident of firing. There are bullet marks on his body. It is believed that he shot himself.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna identified the suspect as 72-year-old Hu Can Tran and said no other suspects were at large. He told a press conference that the motive behind the attack was not yet known. 10 other people were also injured in the attack. Luna did not give the ages of the victims but they appeared to be in their 50s. Seven injured are still undergoing treatment in the hospital.

The sheriff said the suspect had a semi-automatic pistol and a second handgun was recovered from the van in which he was found dead. The shooting late Saturday night in the predominantly Asian-American community of Monterey Park overshadowed New Year’s celebrations and horrified the Asian-American community in the Los Angeles area. Vigil has been increased in other cities as well during the celebrations. Luna had previously released a picture of an Asian man who was believed to be the suspect.

He said that this van was recovered in Torrance area. Five women and five men were killed and 10 others were injured in the shooting at Star Ballroom Dance Studio. Monterey Park Police Chief Scott Weiss said Sunday evening that officers were on the scene within three minutes of receiving a report of the shootings, where they found several bodies and people trying to escape through doors. Luna said the gunman entered the Lai Lai Ballroom in the nearby Alhambra about 20-30 minutes after the first attack, but bystanders snatched his weapon from him and then fled. This is the fifth incident of mass murder in America this month.

About 60,000 people live in Monterey Park. It is about 16 kilometers from downtown Los Angeles and is mostly inhabited by first generation immigrants from China or Asian American people. US President Joe Biden and Attorney General Merrick Garland were informed about the incident. Biden said he and First Lady Jill Biden expressed their condolences to the victims and directed federal authorities to assist with the investigation.
