Maharashtra: Person lost Rs 12 lakh due to hacking of Cryptocurrency account

Thane. The cryptocurrency account of a 37-year-old man in Thane city of Maharashtra was allegedly hacked by an unknown person and made away with USD 15,097 (around Rs 12 lakh). The police gave this information on Monday. An official of the Srinagar police station said that the incident took place on November 1, 2022, but the person complained to the police last week. Based on the complaint, the Srinagar police on Saturday registered a case against the unidentified person under Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 420 (cheating) and provisions of the Information Technology (IT) Act, he said.
The official said that the victim, a resident of Kandivali in neighboring Mumbai, had come to Thane on November 1 for some work. At the same time, someone allegedly hacked his crypto account online and took away about Rs 12 lakh from it. It was later revealed that the amount was directly transferred to the bank account of a company. Police said the victim did not give any reason for filing the complaint after two months and the matter is being investigated.
