Beijing. China and India have made ‘major positive progress’ in resolving the border standoff and intensive dialogue is ongoing between the two sides. A senior official of the Ministry of External Affairs said this here on Friday. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning’s comments came in further detail on China’s reaction to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent statement. The Prime Minister had said that relations with China are important for India and the ‘long standing situation’ on the borders should be resolved immediately.

In an interview with ‘Newsweek’ magazine, the Prime Minister expressed hope that through positive and constructive bilateral interactions at the diplomatic and military levels, the two countries will be able to restore and maintain peace and stability on their borders. “Regarding the border issue, I can tell you that there is cooperation between China and India through diplomatic and military channels,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao said at a media briefing here in response to a question on Modi’s interview with Newsweek. There have been in-depth dialogues through the two countries and great positive progress has been made. We also believe that healthy relations between China and India serve the interests of both countries, he said.

Mao said, “China hopes that India will work with China with the same positivity to properly handle differences and move bilateral relations forward on a healthy and stable path.” This is the second time in the last few days that China has reacted to Modi’s interview. Modi said in his interview, “I believe that we need to urgently resolve the long-running situation on our borders so that the abnormality in our bilateral interactions can be left behind.” “Stable and peaceful relations between China and India are important not only for the two countries, but also for the entire region and the world.”

Responding to a question on Modi’s interview on Thursday, Mao said that China has taken note of Prime Minister Modi’s comments. “Strong and stable China-India relations serve the interests of both countries and are essential for peace and development in the region and beyond,” he said.
