Indian tourists played a major role in the revival of Maldives’ hotel sector after Covid. Some of our travel operators have informed us that they have seen an increase in cancellations of hotel bookings in the Maldives. However, to attract tourist interest towards Lakshadweep, which has been at the center of this controversy, development of infrastructure is necessary. He said that there is a need to develop basic tourism infrastructure like better hotels and resorts in Lakshadweep. Apart from this, there is also a need to start more flights and cruises to encourage travel.
Vistara will keep an eye on demand for flights amid controversy over Maldives
Vistara Airlines said that it will keep an eye on the demand for flights between the two countries in view of the changing situation. Vistara operates one flight each daily from Mumbai and Delhi to Male, the capital of Maldives. The airline’s chief commercial officer Deepak Rajawat said Vistara has not canceled any flights yet and will keep an eye on the demand for flights. When asked about the situation in Maldives, he told reporters that the situation is still developing. We will have to monitor it in a week or two. Apart from Vistara, Air India, Indigo and SpiceJet also operate flights to Maldives. Till now no comment has come from their side on the current situation.
