Maldives supports India for seat in UNSC, appreciates strong ties between the two countries

The Maldivian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the country’s strong support for India is rooted in the strong partnership and close bonds of friendship between the two countries.
Maldives has decided to support India’s candidature for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the term 2028-2029, elections for which are scheduled to be held during the Eighty-first session of the UN General Assembly in June 2027. The decision to extend support to India was taken following the visit of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to Maldives on 18 and 19 January.
The Maldivian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the country’s strong support for India is rooted in the strong partnership and close bonds of friendship between the two countries. The statement said that India has consistently demonstrated strong and effective leadership in maintaining international peace and security. India has also been a strong supporter of the values and principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter. The Government of Maldives is confident that India will continue to be the voice of all developing countries in the Security Council and contribute meaningfully to the global dialogue on peace and security in the years to come.
During his visit to Maldives, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar met President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and held discussions with Foreign Affairs Minister Abdulla Shahid. The visit saw signing of agreements related to bilateral development cooperation besides ground-breaking, inauguration and handing over and launching of several major India-supported projects contributing to the socio-economic development of Maldives.
