Inspector General of Prisons in Balochistan, Shuja Qasi, confirmed that the rockets fell on the walls of the residential colony of Mach Jail. Mortar shells and rockets exploded close to the colony walls, he said. He said that no casualties have been reported so far. He said that currently 800 prisoners are lodged in Mach jail, including some death row prisoners. While the minister claimed the terrorists were linked to the Aslam Acho group, the Majeed Brigade of the banned Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) group later claimed responsibility for the attack. A security official said the exchange of fire between heavily armed militants and forces lasted for a few hours before they fled into the surrounding mountains before daylight. He said there was no loss to any establishment.

Why is BLA attacking Pakistani police?

The attack was an apparent retaliation for Pakistani attacks on what the country described as rebel bases in Iran in early January. The BLA had threatened to launch attacks on security forces in Balochistan and elsewhere following Pakistan’s attacks on their camps in Iran on January 18, which left at least nine dead.
