Amid reports of Indian citizens signing up for supporting jobs in the Russian Army, the Ministry of External Affairs had urged Indian citizens to exercise caution.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued a statement on the petition by four Indian youths who were allegedly forced to join the Russian Army and are now stranded in Russia on the war-torn Ukraine border. Expressing concern over the situation, the Ministry of External Affairs clarified its stand on media reports regarding Indian citizens seeking discharge from the Russian Army. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, every matter brought to the attention of the Indian Embassy in Moscow has been taken up strongly with the Russian authorities. Similarly, matters brought to the attention of the Ministry have been addressed with the Russian Embassy in New Delhi. Many Indians have been released as a result of this effort. The Ministry of External Affairs has also reaffirmed its commitment to actively pursue all relevant cases of Indian nationals for their early release from Russian forces.
Earlier, the Ministry of External Affairs had urged Indian citizens to exercise caution amid reports of Indian citizens signing up for supporting jobs in the Russian Army. This comes after All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Asaduddin Owaisi earlier urged the Ministry of External Affairs to rescue the Indians.
The ministry’s action is in response to a job fraud scam, where Indian youth were promised jobs in supporting or other non-combat roles in the Russian army. However, upon reaching Russia, he was conscripted into a private militia force to fight Ukrainian forces on the battlefield. One such victim, whose case has attracted attention, is Mohammad Sufiyan (22) of Narayanpet.
