A British-Indian couple faced charges in a London court for smuggling unapproved medical drugs from India to the US. They are fighting the US government’s effort to extradite them. Kiranjit Ghuman, 45, and Sukhijit Singh Ghuman, 46, who live on a 23-acre estate in Nottinghamshire, England, were detained last year based on a US extradition request. Appearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, the couple confirmed their identities and dates of birth.
His extradition hearing is scheduled for three days from September 16. Under their bail conditions, the couple must remain at home between midnight and 6am. His passport, US Green Card and Kiranjeet’s Indian ID card have been confiscated by the police. Additionally, Sukhijit will have to surrender any Dubai identity card. They must report to the police station every Wednesday, stay at home overnight and refrain from applying for travel documents or leaving the country. Each has deposited £150,000 as a security deposit.
The US aims to extradite him to face charges of smuggling medical drugs into the country, distributing unapproved drugs in various states and engaging in health care fraud, wire fraud and illegal distribution of medical drugs. The charges show that they conspired to smuggle medical drugs from India to the US for cancer and rheumatology patients treated at medical clinics in California and Arizona owned by Octavian Chairman and CEO Sukhijit.
