Mexico City. Mexico on Tuesday released a video of the forced entry of Ecuadorian officials into its embassy. In the video, Ecuadorian police pushed a Mexican diplomat to the ground and pulled out the former Vice President of Ecuador who was hiding there. Tensions between the two countries have been heightened by Friday night’s crackdown since George Glass, a convicted criminal and fugitive former Vice President, sought refuge in the Mexican embassy in December.
Ecuadorian police entered the embassy by climbing the walls on Friday. Roberto Canseco, Mexico’s head of consular affairs and currently the highest-ranking diplomat since Ecuador expelled the ambassador earlier in the week, tried to stop him from entering the embassy, but Ecuadorian police stopped him and pushed him to the ground. But dropped.
Mexico as well as experts say that this appears to be a flagrant violation of international agreements. In response, Mexico broke diplomatic relations with the country. At a daily news conference, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador showed video of the incident and said it showed how authoritarian and despicable the police had raided the embassy. López Obrador criticized Canada and the United States for not speaking out strongly enough against the raid. Mexico has said it plans to file a formal complaint with the International Court of Justice.
