With this, the total military aid given by the US to Ukraine has gone up to $27.5 billion. Foreign Minister Antony Blinken announced on Thursday, “Under this aid package, Ukraine will be given hundreds of additional armored vehicles, including Stryker armored personnel vehicles, Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, anti-mine vehicles and high mobility multipurpose vehicles.” He said. That the package would give Ukraine significant additional air defense systems, including more Avenger air defense systems and surface-to-air missiles.
Blinken said in a statement that the package includes night surveillance equipment, small arms and ammunition and other items to aid Ukraine as it bravely defends its people, sovereignty and territorial integrity. “With this package totaling $2.5 billion, the total US military assistance to Ukraine will reach an unprecedented estimated $27.5 billion,” she said. The package does not include the tanks which have become the center of controversy as Germany has indicated that it will not send its Leopard tanks to Ukraine unless the US sends Abrams tanks. At the same time, the US says that the Abrams tanks are not suitable for the current battle because they require frequent maintenance and fuel. In a separate statement, the Pentagon said the Kremlin’s recent airstrikes against critical Ukrainian infrastructure once again show the devastating effect of Russia’s barbaric war in Ukraine. It added that the package includes additional NASAMS ammunition and Avenger air defense systems to help Ukraine deal with short- and medium-range threats and strengthen its air defenses.
