Modi meets Italy PM Giorgia Meloni amid COP28 meeting, discusses sustainable and prosperous future

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday met Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on the sidelines of the United Nations World Climate Action Summit (COP28) in Dubai. The Prime Minister said in a tweet that there is hope for collaborative efforts between India and Italy for a sustainable and prosperous future. Along with this, Modi said that it was a pleasure to meet the President of Guyana, Dr. Mohammed Irfan Ali. Our discussions underlined the importance of close cooperation between countries of the Global South in pursuing a sustainable future for our planet.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the web portal of the Green Credit Program at the COP28 World Climate Action Summit with Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Christerson, Mozambique’s President Philippe Jacinto Nyusi and European Council President Charles Michel. At the same time, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi tweeted that there was a warm conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on the occasion of COP28 in Dubai. Discussions include G20 India; India’s progress in achieving climate goals; Included were the priorities and concerns of the Global South related to climate action, climate finance, technology and reforms of multilateral institutions. UNSG affirmed to work with India to build on India’s achievements at the future G20 UN Summit in 2024.

Speaking at a high-level event on Green Credit Program at the COP28 World Climate Action Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that I have always felt that the scope of carbon credits is very limited. This philosophy is, in a way, influenced by the commercial element. I have seen a lack of sense of social responsibility in the carbon credit system. We have to emphasize on a completely new philosophy. He said that just as we give importance to our health card in life, similarly we have to start thinking in terms of environment also. We have to see what needs to be done to add positive points to the health card of the Earth. I think that’s what green credit is all about.
