A provision of Rs 10.1 lakh crore was made for capital expenditure in the Union Budget 2023-24, which is 33 per cent higher than last year’s revised estimates. Ministries like Petroleum, Power and Defense have spent the least of this so far. A source said that it is very important to use capital expenditure and it also needs to be closely monitored. At the same time, the government is also aware that the capital outlay was reduced by Rs 6,000 crore in the revised estimates last year.
focus on welfare schemes
It is also necessary for the government to focus on its flagship welfare schemes. These include PM Awas Yojana, Ayushman Bharat and Jal Jeevan Mission. A large section of the people who have taken advantage of these schemes have emerged as the vote bank of the BJP. In such a situation, the aim of the government is to connect more and more people with these schemes in the coming days. A source said that the saturation of these schemes is very important for the government. Their benefits are reaching the people at the grassroots level and new infrastructure is being created through schemes like MNREGA. This also gives political advantage to the government.
The third issue is the implementation of the announcements made in the budget. This also has its political advantages. In the last budget, the government had made about 30 big announcements. Now only nine months are left in this financial year. That’s why its review is also considered necessary. A source said that all these announcements are important and the government wants them to be implemented properly. Only a few months are left for the general elections. The emphasis of the government will be on capital expenditure to boost the economy and to connect more and more people with welfare schemes. Most of the proposals have been cleared by the Expenditure Finance Committee and the concerned ministries.
