Mohammad Shahabuddin Chuppu is going to be the next President of Bangladesh

Former judge Mohammad Shahabuddin Chuppu is all set to become the next President of Bangladesh as the Awami League, the party with an absolute majority in the country’s parliament, has nominated him for the top post. The term of current President Mohammad Abdul Hamid ends on April 24 this year. “Chuppu’s nomination paper submitted by the Bangladesh Awami League has been received,” a Bangladesh Election Commission spokesperson said. The commission will now complete the formalities of his election as a member of Parliament.

In Bangladesh’s 350-member parliament, the Awami League currently has 305 members. Thus, it is almost certain for Chuppu to become the President. Election Commission officials and political analysts say that Chuppu’s election as the 22nd President of Bangladesh is now a mere formality as the official opposition parties in parliament have not put forward anyone else’s name for the country’s top post.

The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) also cannot nominate anyone for the presidency, as all seven of its MPs resigned in December 2022 as part of an anti-government campaign. General elections in the country are proposed in December this year. Meanwhile, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Qadir told reporters that the Awami League Parliamentary Party (ALPP) had asked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to decide whether to nominate a presidential candidate.

After much brainstorming, he offered the name of former judge Mohammad Shahabuddin Chuppu. Chuppu was born in Pabna district. He was the leader of the student and youth wing of the Awami League in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He also participated in the Liberation War of 1971. Chuppu is survived by his wife Rebecca Sultana and a son. Sultana has been Joint Secretary in Bangladesh.
