Daniel Mookhey is the first leader of Indian origin to become the Finance Minister (Treasurer) of any state of Australia. Mookhey, a practicing Hindu, was sworn in on Tuesday with the holy Bhagavad Gita as witness. Mookhey was sworn in along with New South Wales (NSW) Premier Chris Min and six other ministers, The Australia Today reported. “Sworn in as Finance Minister of the great state of New South Wales,” Mookhey, 39, said in a statement. Thank you to the people of NSW for bestowing this honor and privilege.
“I am incredibly honored to be the first Australian minister (in state or union) to take the oath of allegiance to office with the Bhagavad Gita as witness. This is only possible because Australia is very inclusive and appreciative of the contribution of people like my parents. I was thinking about him during the swearing-in earlier today. Mukhi’s parents had migrated to Australia in 1973 from Punjab. Born in the suburbs of Blacktown, Mookhey holds three university degrees. There are currently 6.8 lakh Hindus living in Australia and the Hindu community is the third largest religious community in the country.
