More money needed to fight cholera in Somalia: WHO

Mogadishu: The World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday called for more funding to increase response activities to contain the cholera outbreak in Somalia where the number of cholera patients continues to rise. WHO in its latest report said there is an urgent need for additional operational funding to scale up the implementation of response activities to contain the current outbreak. A total of 2,943 new cases of cholera and 26 deaths have been recorded in Somalia since January 2024, according to Somalia’s Health Ministry.
WHO said lack of safe water and proper sanitation is a major cause of the current cholera outbreak among displaced persons, mainly living on the banks of the Shabelle River. A new outbreak of cholera has been confirmed in Hargeisa and Galibe districts of Somalia, following an outbreak of cholera in Ethiopia. WHO said that in collaboration with health partners, it has scaled up the implementation of cholera response activities in flood-affected districts from October 2023. There has been uninterrupted transmission of cholera in Somalia since 2022 and in the Banadir region since the 2017 drought.
More than 18,304 cases and 46 deaths were reported in Somalia in 2023. At the same time, more than 10,000 children below the age of five years were affected by it. According to the United Nations Children’s Fund or UNICEF, the outlook for cholera in 2024 remains serious. Many countries in eastern and southern Africa have already been hit by heavy rains and El Nino, which has triggered spikes in some countries.
