A senior UN official told the UN Security Council that the people of Ukraine are going through unimaginable suffering due to the Russian attacks and more than 40 percent of the citizens are in need of humanitarian assistance.
Ramesh Rajasingham, Coordination Director at the Human Rights Office at the United Nations, said that since February 2022, thousands of civilians have been killed in Russian attacks on homes, schools, farms and markets.
The UN human rights office has officially confirmed 9,900 civilians were killed, but he said, “the actual number is certainly likely to be much higher.” Rajasingham said Ukrainian civilians were suffering “unimaginable suffering” due to the Russian attacks. ‘Are suffering.
He said that 18 million citizens of Ukraine (more than 40 percent of the population) need some form of humanitarian assistance. He said that as the winter season approaches, the needs will increase.
Rajasingham said that due to damage to infrastructure in the attacks, people have been deprived of facilities like electricity, water and communication. In such a situation, as the winter season begins, problems for the citizens will increase.
The elderly, disabled and displaced people will have to suffer the most. The Russian military targeted Ukraine’s power plants and other critical infrastructure in missile and drone attacks last winter, resulting in persistent power outages.
